Progress against objectives

As one of the UK’s largest companies, we recognise that we have a responsibility to manage and minimise our impacts on the environment, as well as an opportunity to contribute positively to the regeneration of the built environment. We have worked extensively to embed sustainable design and management practices across our business.

Objective Progress in 2007 Plans for 2008
Transport:    
– Continue the implementation of travel plans and aim to complete at all directly managed UK shopping centres by 2007. – Travel plans fully implemented in 7 centres. – Complete travel plans at Braehead, Chimes and Victoria Centre.
Energy, Water:    
– Aim to achieve a 5 per cent reduction in energy consumed in 2006 at the directly managed UK shopping centres, subject to normal weather patterns.
– Aim to build on current water data to ensure a robust baseline across all shopping centres.
– Continue to explore the potential for renewable energy, re-use of rainwater and other sustainable practices in our new developments.
– 7% overall energy reduction on 2006 in managed centres.
– Water monitoring in place and baseline established.
– Rainwater harvesting and biomass boiler in Oxford design.
– Progress Carbon Trust findings to reduce operational energy use.
Waste:    
– Aim to achieve 40 per cent of waste recycled at our UK shopping centres in 2006.
– Research other opportunities to reduce waste sent to landfill.
– 39% of waste from centres recycled.
– Waste audits and advice on improving recycling rates at all centres.
– Work with retailers to encourage recycling and waste reduction.
Sustainable Design and Development:    
– All new developments to achieve a BREEAM standard of “Very Good”.
– Continue to employ contractors who implement our environmental objectives on site.
– A requirement for major contracts.
– Major construction contractors now supply CR performance indicators.
– Roll out of Retailer Handbooks underway.
– Complete the roll out of Retailer Handbooks.
Regeneration of Derelict and Brownfield Sites:    
– Continue to ensure the efficient use of land to support regeneration and economic growth and maintain our development programme on brownfield land. – Work ongoing in Braehead and Cardiff. – Replacing overhead pylons in Braehead with underground cables.
Procurement:    
– Implement the programme of supplier engagement in line with the Supply Chain Policy.
– Undertake audits of critical suppliers to ensure compliance with the Supply Chain Policy.
– Develop where appropriate minimum standards for certain goods and services in line with the Environmental and Supply Chain policies.
– Procedures established for working with key suppliers.
– Audit systems in place.
– Operational performance indicators monitored monthly and reviewed by contract manager and centre managers.
– Maintain working procedures.
– Further audits planned.
– Ongoing monitoring of performance indicators.
