‘The Three Brooks Grass Roots’ regeneration project in Bradley Stoke, Bristol promoted by The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, completed its initial phase in June which was celebrated by a weekend activity programme for the local community.

The project, undertaken with our partners, Prudential and The Jack Bayliss Trust, and managed by BTCV involved the regeneration of Gorse Covert, an area of mature woodland and adjoining fields, having local nature reserve status. An awareness programme has helped the local community appreciate the benefits resulting from the efforts of volunteers bringing back into public use what was previously neglected land. The diversity of woodland, plants and particular wildlife in its natural habitats has enhanced the area and provided leisure and recreational opportunities for the local community.

The project has now been handed over to local interest groups who will manage the amenity in the future.

In November, Braehead shopping centre, Renfrew, Scotland, together with BTCV, launched the Renfrewshire Green Gym project. Braehead, together with its partners Xscape and Snozone, have committed funds for the next three years in supporting this project.

As its name implies, the project focuses on members of local communities participating in outdoor regeneration activities providing them with a way of enjoying physical exercise compared with the traditional alternatives. The project will concentrate on locations in Paisley and Renfrew areas where valuable work can be undertaken in restoring neglected areas. Initially work at each location will be undertaken under the supervision of the appointed BTCV project manager.

It is envisaged that after a reasonable period each location will also become self managed by the community members enabling the project manager to move on to initiate further schemes.
